Please read through this thread before posting any questions on the forum. This is to prevent us from having to answer frequent questions we get over and over, and also to let anyone new to the site and community know more about us and what we currently have going on with our work.
What is Ginga Scans?
Exactly what it sounds like: we are a team dedicated to scanlating and releasing English translations of Yoshihiro Takahashi's work to help the fandom share in his stories. We were founded on April 1st, 2012, and since then, we've finished dozens of stories and completed half a dozen series, plus additional content like soundtracks, commercials, interviews and art books. All of our work is available to registered members, but is not allowed to be shared outside of our forum unless specifically permitted; we do this to prevent manga reading sites from trying to steal our work and to make sure people are getting our correct scans here, without any incorrect mistranslations or distribution. Please read our thread on the topic before anything else, not respecting this rule and our credit will lead to permanent banning.
Is this site still active?
Yep! Check around the site for our latest work, which we'll always show previews of in the news table on the main page. We grow busier each year as we have more and more series we're working on, with a bigger team and better support from our members. There is never an estimate on how long it takes between chapter releases, but on average, we release two chapters a month, at the very least, and around 4 or 5 chapters a month at the quickest. You can also always check our Site Updates or Scanlation Updates threads to see if there's any news about production, new series to come out, and anything having to do with what to expect from Ginga Scans.
How many series have been translated?
You can see all of our work in the Uploaded Scans category, which is only visible and accessible to registered members. We will also show all of our finished volumes and projects in the news table. We have plenty of finished volumes of Shiroi Senshi Yamato, Byakuren no Fangu and Ginga Nagareboshi in there, as well as over a dozen of the shorter stories and bonuses.
How do I know which scanlations are allowed to be shared?
Most of the time in the main post with the download link, I will specifically mention that the scanlation is allowed for free use and can be shared. If you are curious about any scanlations and free sharing, PM me first before anything - don't risk sharing scanlations that weren't allowed to be shared. Our update of available free sharing scanlations will be up in our new 2.0 site, where I will personally put up downloads for the public to help spread our work to other communities so they can see we are dedicated to our scanlating.
Are you going to translate Ginga Densetsu Weed: Orion?
Yes, right after we finish Ginga Densetsu Weed, which won't be worked on until we finish Ginga Nagareboshi Gin. We have Shiroi Senshi Yamato we are also working on, and other stories like Byakuren no Fangu, Ginga Densetsu Riki, Shin Gaiden, Lassie, and the list goes on. We are not going to drop all of these projects because a few people want to see all thirty volumes of GDW:O translated. We also would rather you did not drop in as a guest or a one-time poster just to tell us to do it. We are a small team already working on three to four major projects, with plenty of others waiting in line, and we don't get paid for any of it, so please refrain from requests and demands of us abandoning all the current work we are doing just for this one series. All questions or requests about us scanlating GDW:O will immediately be removed, even in the Errors and Questions board, because it is a question we have already answered multiple times. Yes, we are going to do GDW:O - no, we are not doing it right now and it will have to wait once GDW is finished.
Where is your Ginga Densetsu Weed scanlation? Where can I find it?
We have not started on Ginga Densetsu Weed yet, as we are still continuing on the last arc of Ginga Nagareboshi Gin. The Ginga series are very long and take a lot of time, especially with several other projects being done alongside them. Once GNG has been finished, GDW will begin, and you can find it in the Uploaded Scans category, in the Ginga Densetsu Weed board.
Can I join your scanlating team?
Proof of your ability to scan, clean or typeset will need to be PMed to me. You need to have experience with these in order for us to have you as a helping hand. You also need to be an active member so we know you won't vanish out of existence the second you are given a rank title. You can ask to show me your work or practice via a PM, but depending on your availability, you may either be chosen as a team member or a volunteer. We cannot risk having people on the team that are unable to provide or help us with scanlations and slow progress. For some, being a volunteer is more suitable.
What is a volunteer?
A volunteer is someone who helps us with our scanlations or provides resources, but is not given deadlines, assignments or a rank title like a team member. This is mainly because a volunteer does not have the time or availability to actively help us, so we cannot rely on them to finish a project on time or give resources when desired. Instead, a volunteer is given appreciation and credit in our main page news table, in thanks for their help, but they provide help in their own free time. Team members are given appreciation through their work but can be depended on for active help and support with projects to make sure we can keep a schedule. Anyone may volunteer, but we need proof of your work. It is up to staff depending on your availability and help if you can be assigned a job as a team member. You cannot be involved in the progress of a current project or any of our ongoing work as a volunteer because this would mean your unavailability could slow the project down.
How can I help Ginga Scans?
Telling other sites about our work and sharing the scans we have publicly announced are allowed to be shared really helps other communities know about us and be able to see our selection. If not for our members, we wouldn't continue doing scanlations, so even just being around the site and helping our little community grow and build a network of friends is what draws a lot of people in to find others with similar interests. Donating is also accepted, but we don't want people to think it is required. You may PM me about donations that we can use to buy manga or materials or just in support of us, as has been done numerous times. All help given to us by you will be shown in the appreciation credits of the main site, so people know how thankful we are to those that lend a hand in keeping our site functioning and add to our growing community. You can also PM me asking for more available options when we seem to need an extra hand in script restoration and editing. We also have some scans that are still unavailable to us, so PMing me asking what our current selection is is recommended.
