So how are you guys liking this story so far? What do you dislike about it? What do you think about characters or the plot and such? I thought we should have a thread where people can talk about anything regarding the topic so we're not limited to only the chapter releases. NOTE: For spoilers, such as anything past the chapters and volumes that we have fully scanlated, that deals in a plot twist, big events, or character deaths must go in the spoiler box. The spoiler is the smiley with tape over its mouth in an X shape; click on it to be given a small box where you can type in the spoiler. Here are examples of spoilers. No, actual spoilers are not in the example so you may click it without anything being spoiled for you : (_____) died. Do not give out any character deaths, even the obvious ones, since many people haven't skimmed the manga.
(____) is actually not dead/ is evil/ is actually someone else entirely. No big reveals or plot twists.
Mentioning characters that we haven't reached yet in this series are fine, but any drastic changes or events happening to them must be spoilered.
The ending to the series, or ending to the arcs must be spoilered.

I wish I had more to say overall about SSY, it being possibly my favorite Yoshi story. I just really enjoy it's quirkiness and how crazy it likes to get. It has kind of an "enemy of the week" approach, which is incredibly interesting to me, considering the dog protagonist. Since it goes between Yamato's time in the ring and his other insane shenanigans, it never gets dull like BnF might have, were it longer, and the resulting feel is kind of one part Lassie; one part atypical Shounen arc, with just stronger and stronger things showing up to counter any new skills the hero gains. On that note, I also feel Yamato isn't as OP as other protagonists in Yoshihiro's works. He's meant to be very strong and good at overcoming the odds, as with any Shounen hero, but I noticed I can actually feel peril with his encounters. That may be an illusion derived from just how crazy his opponents can get, (Tigers... Gorillas... Sharks... Giant dog-eating flying squirrels... You name it - it happens in SSY.) but it still makes me happy to be able to feel that, as odd as that may sound. I love how I can just sit there going "What the hell is this? That's crazy!" and laughing at that, while also actually feeling some tension and wanting to see how Yamato deals with it. Like I've said about BnF, I really don't think this story suffers for the heavy human involvement. I've heard people say that that's what drives them away from it, but it's not the case for me. Unlike with GNG, I don't think it could be the same story without Yamato's relationship with Ryou and how it helps him be the best dog he can be, and get into all these crazy adventures. The only real gripe I have with the humans is that they tend to end up in the "damsel in distress" role, and need to be saved by the dogs, whereas I'd rather see them working together as equals. But a character always needing to be saved is kind of a Shounen trope, as well, so it's not a huge blip on my radar. The biggest thing I've noticed is that I think SSY caters better to Yoshi's usual writing style, because there are no longstanding loose ends to wrap up, or as much need for character growth and such. It's just straight up crazy, action, or heartwarming, in very short bursts. So despite its length, I still feel like there's less to be critical of, and I can enjoy it without feeling like I should be able to better relate to a character or situation that I can't. The only thing that bugs me a great deal is Toshio abruptly hating Ryou and Yamato because... reasons, right after Yamato saved his life. It feels like Yoshi never intended him to be a villain and then randomly shoehorned it in, next chapter, or something. ... I sound more like a reviewer with my thoughts, don't I? Also...SHE SAYS, as she manages to babble a tiny incoherent novel.

Soo, I'm finally starting SSY. I've been curious about it for ages because it seems bizarre, so here we go! I'll probably never be fully comfortable with these stories that glorify dogfighting, but whatever.
Right off the bat, two things bother me: These people claim they love their dogs and are bonded with them, but have no problem risking said dogs' lives in the ring. As we were talking about in the cbox, Yoshi has completely disregarded the rules of Japanese dog fights. These people are way too eager to let their dogs be maimed or even killed. I thought Toshio was supposed to be Ryou's friend?? They seemed like friendly rivals, then suddenly Toshio is plotting Yamato's death. Jeez.
Haha, 'German shepherds have more wolf blood than any other breed.' Damn it Yoshi, eagles are NOT strong enough to pick up a dog that big. I feel bad for the bird, too. Then again, I also felt bad for the bear. Holy shit, that poor tiger??? Was that really necessary, Yoshi??
Jumbo is super cute, and I kind of like his owner so far.
Lol, 'Black Satan.' Real subtle name. Honestly, why does Yoshi think there are so many giant-ass packs of feral dogs in Japan?
WOW nevermind, I don't like Kosuke anymore. Those poor dogs!! D8 Does Yoshi like animals at all, man? Kosuke really is a shitty dog owner. I feel sorry for Black Satan, as well... And now there's some dude in a mariachi hat in the road, and that seems like a good stopping place for tonight. Jeebus christ.
