I like Juuzaburou infinitely more than Gohei. Gohei, who is a cow in this story, LOL.
Also, ending is abrupt and completely depressing... Still, I like this story.

Hmm, Fubuki was a bear hunter before he became a fighting dog? Nice. I dunno wich training I prefer, Gohê's or Jûzaburô's. And Gohê a cow here.

I feel bad for the old guy. Do you guys know how old this is? The beginning reminded me a lot of GNG and the art isn't as good as some of Yoshi's later works. Thanks for the translation!

I believe it's from the 70's. I actually like the art better than his later stuff, but I can see why other people wouldn't.

I don't have an exact date, but I'm very certain it was in the 70s a year or more after Shiroi Senshi Yamato. I definitely know this was before GNG, so this is where we can see how it was greatly inspired by this specific story (Juuzaburou = Gohei, bear hound training, GNG popular names like Fuji, Gohei, etc.)

Definitely is a prototype for GNG, that much is obvious. I love the illustration though, especially the backgrounds and how detailed they are. GNG has nice ambiance as well, and the beginning of GDW, but then the backgrounds start to look like crap): (well, I guess it all starts to look like crap).

I agree, Kausza, I love the older style of the dogs around this time and GNG, but I do love the new style GDW brought along until it got real sloppy in the later half when the Hougen arc died. It mainly got weirder near the end with Viktor, and then... well yeah, we all have seen the horror that is GDW:Orion...

Is it just me, or does it seem sort of like this story almost completely contradicts the backstory set up for Fubuki in SSY?

It does. Unfortunately, a lot of Yoshi's short stories or spin-offs greatly mess up the continuity. If we were to go by Yamato's canon, none of this even happened, or if we were to believe this was full canon with SSY, the old man Zenkichi and his whole origin of making Fubuki into a fighting dog is completely moot. Plus so would Hayate and Yamato living with Fubuki when they were tiny, because in SSY, Yamato and Hayate trained as bear hounds with Fubuki.
You kinda have to ignore this being canon with SSY, or try glomping all of Fubuki's backstories into one mess. It's the Yoshi way to do it, lol.

So true.
I just find it rather funny, looking back and finding all these continuity errors. It's sort of like he approaches each project like it's completely new and separate from anything that's come before, so he just feels free to add in whatever occurs to him at the time, completely forgetting he's already told a shorter version of the story somewhere else that completely contradicts everything. It makes it sort of hard to establish any hard and fast backstories for his characters, because you never know when he's going to come around and change them.

Yeah, I was very very confused while reading this because I kept waiting for Fubuki to start being a fighting dog, or at least the whole thing to end with something that would introduce a new owner to him, which would lead to the other back story in SSY's first volume. But I guess not, Yoshi. Regardless I liked this short! Fubuki is cool dog and Juuzaburou was a great guy, I would have happily read a longer story about these two together. The ending was a surprise bummer, but it was still cool to see how much Juuzaburou cared for his dog! Both versions of Fubuki's back stories are pretty sad, but I think I prefer this version over the one in SSY.
