kaiarmydog D: Why do you think Riki is a bad father? He saves Gin's life at the beginning of the manga (even if he didn't know he was his son - it still counts ), and then loses his memory. Do you mean he should have told him to stay behind during the last fight? Maybe he knew he couldn't kill Akakabuto without him.
In this regard Gin is much worse, at least in the anime, he watched Weed getting mauled by Hougen without lifting a finger.
Ahh, don't worry, I tend to over-analize too sometimes. I'm a professional writer in my native tongue, and although I hardly write stories (I specialize in copywriting and manuals), I know the basics of storytelling and character development. I just try not to think about it when I watch a movie or series, because that spoils the magic.
Right, I remember you also said that in another topic I read some days ago. By any logic, P4 should be barely alive. But apparently he's got some kind of super-strengh, so I'll just accept it a a fact.
Yeah, and that's all too commong in cartoons. The fact that Jerome wants to help Weed but doesn't agree with his methods at least makes him a bi-dimentional character, that's better than most of the other mono-dimentional ones (Kai brothers, Akame, Moss, Gin, Ben, Sniper etc). In Yoshi's defense though, developing so many 3-D characters would take SO many volumes...
Hmm, that changes the situation then. I'll need to read the manga and see how Akatora's role was different. Do you remember how he compares to Ben during their fight? I haven't read that part in the manga yet.
Because in GDW, his two brothers (who are supposed to be as strong as him I guess) don't really shine. At all. They might be old, but apparently dogs in the Ginga universe don't age so...
I also just remembered that chapter whre John first saw and attacked Ben, but his bite didn't even tickle him. And John was already a decent dog. Now, how much did John improve in GDW? Because if he didn't improve much, then Ben is stronger than anyone but Beni-Gin-Riki. On the other extreme, John in GDW might have become stronger than Ben ever was, and then Ben is out of the top 10. I honestly can't remember him taking down Akakabuto's bodyguard, maybe it was only in the manga? If he does that, then he's probably in the top 5...
Question: does Ben ever loses to anyone? Because if he takes down Akakabuto's bodyguard, and we assume that it was stronger than Hougen (again, no matter how OP Yoshi makes his characters, I won't believe a dog can take down a big bear 1vs1 unless it's shown beyond doubt), then Ben is weaker than Riki but either stronger or at the same level of Jerome. Although at the beginning of GNG, he can't even take down a regular bear on his own. Huge inconsistency there.
I couldn't have said it better myself.

@bucciamarcia Nah, you bring up some good points, that I honestly used to agree with, before I started writing more and learning how to analyze characters and storytelling a little better. Yoshi's works in general - but especially Ginga - are things that need to just be taken at face value... But I can't do it... I can't stop the over-analyzing...

Nothing really comes to mind with P4. I just vaguely remember the manga saying he was supposed to be an experiment for organ donation for human medical research, so he had all kinds of genes in him to try and stabilize the new organs to healthy levels, or something... I guess by B movie logic, having a bunch of different parts in you would make you stronger, but with thinking realistically, it just seems like he'd be really sick all the time, if even alive.

I honestly can't think of any good character development that wasn't instantaneous... Maybe in his other works, but I haven't read those outside of translating.

Akatora shows he's an excellent fighter, in every manga battle, but I agree that it's never really spotlighted stuff. His attack of just launching at Akakabuto was because he already knew he was going to die, and was limited, with his wound. In the manga, he'd had that eye wound for most of the battle, and didn't receive it right before his death, like in the anime. So he'd kinda been slowly bleeding out for hours, and wasn't doing too well by the point he sacrificed himself. He also got torn almost completely in half by Akakabuto, on his way to his eye, instead of just poked in the throat like in the anime. So it's pretty impressive he followed through and still ripped out his opponent's eye, successfully.

Ben probably was the second strongest dog before Gin and Benizakura showed up, yeah. He was able to beat up Sniper, who was second-in-command, and took down one of Akakabuto's elite bodyguards pretty much on his own, in the final battle, despite his sight fluctuating in and out. Plus, he did it by flipping the thing over his shoulder like a rag doll. If that's not hilariously cool, I don't know what is.

And no worries, I just love over-analyzing, so it always seems like I'm hating on things, when I'm not really meaning to. I love debating, since it allows me to expand my view to a more well-rounded one, with outside input, and sort out my own thoughts and feelings better.
I couldn't have said it better myself.
