Now that we're almost nearing the end of the Akakabuto arc, I figured we needed a general discussion page so we're not limited to the chapter releases to talk. What do you guys like most about this series, characters, plot, anything! GNG is one of the most beloved of Yoshi's stories so feel free to discuss anything about it in here, questions and answers and all. NOTE: For spoilers, such as anything past the chapters and volumes that we have fully scanlated, that deals in a plot twist, big events, or character deaths must go in the spoiler box. The spoiler is the smiley with tape over its mouth in an X shape; click on it to be given a small box where you can type in the spoiler. Here are examples of spoilers. No, actual spoilers are not in the example so you may click it without anything being spoiled for you : (_____) died. Do not give out any character deaths, even the obvious ones, since many people haven't skimmed the manga.
(____) is actually not dead/ is evil/ is actually someone else entirely. No big reveals or plot twists.
Mentioning characters that we haven't reached yet in this series are fine, but any drastic changes or events happening to them must be spoilered.
The ending to the series, or ending to the arcs must be spoilered.
Any anime content does NOT need to be spoilered, only the manga, in these rules.

So I felt like posting here, because GNG will always confuse me. Not because of the magical spinning dogs, or the resurrections. (Have those ever even been explained? LOL) But because it's my favourite animanga series of all time. For well... absolutely no reason. In comparison with my other two favourite animanga series (Kekkaishi and Fullmetal Alchemist) GNG is very inferior in plot, characters, character development, plot twists, new ideas, and overall clarity. And yet if I were to rank those three series, GNG would still come out on top. It has never made any sense to me, especially since I have a critical mind when it comes to writing. (Though Kit is probably a bigger critic than me- in a good way though.) Looking without bias towards GNG it is very dull and repetitive. It's the same thing over and over again. 1. We must look for manly menz! 2. Oh look manly menz! 3. Darnit, the manly menz want to fight us! 4. [Insert some bullshit reason why] manly menz decided to stop fighting us!/join us! 5. Manly menz (who are usually acclaimed for some reason or another as the best fighters ever) suddenly become background characters. (Wolf Arc Stuff) Arguably the Wolf Arc does break away from this. Though since it's not "canon" (because Yoshi likes confusing us) I guess it doesn't count. Still, the fact that it was less about recruiting and more of a rescue mission was pretty cool. Though Gin joining with Reima just seemed... unrealistic.
But then again we have a guy that can form into a giant thousand man wolf, and a wolf who can make tornadoes. So I guess realism doesn't apply.
#AlsoJugaWhippingHisHairBackAndForth The manga has made me realize that some of the characters are more interesting than they appear to be in the anime. (For whatever reason.) But still the character development is either forced so said character can join the Ohu army, or nonexistent. I think the only exemplar is Hyena. But his case was fairly atypical for the Ginga universe. And in scale to character development from other stories, was still pretty bad. In all honesty the Akakabuto idea had a lot of potential. A crazed bear forming an army, and dogs being the only ones able to stop it actually could have been really intriguing. (And I guess it still was, but not as much as it could have been.) The Wolf arc likewise had so much potential. Also, I'm not a huge fan of Gin, mainly because he has no character at all. That's why I don't hate him either, there's nothing to hate. He's an overpowered kid who learns how to spin like a pro and saves the day. He had no character development, it's so stoic and stale its sad. He's a prime example of a 'flat' character, and since he's the protagonist, that's not saying good things about the story. (That brindle bullshit too is just hilarious. "I HAVE STRIPES SO I DON'T HAVE TO BOW TO PHYSICS.") From an unbias standpoint the story was awful, and there's no reason I should enjoy it. But I do, for some bizarre reason that I will never know.

But because it's my favourite animanga series of all time. For well... absolutely no reason. I couldn't have said it better myself, Ginga is my favorite series even though I admit technically the story and characters aren't that good. (Although for me the reason is that I watched it in full dogs withdrawal) But what can I say, you don't rationally decide what you like and what you dislike. It is, by definition, an emotion. You can try to rationalize, but it doesn't work like that. Although unlike you I do like Gin. There isn't much character development, true, but he's at least better than all those dogs that just fade in the background. The problem is that, I think, most GNG characters come from the same stereotype, and Yoshi doesn't even try to differentiate them in any meaningful way. I haven't read the wolf arc yet, but the Akakabuto part really had a lot of potential. Like you said, it was mostly wasted in this repetitive dog gathering quest (just like a badly thought RPG). But what can I say, I just enjoy my fandom without thinking too much about it.

(Finally getting around to this one.) I really have nothing much to say... I'm not a big fan of GNG, as a lot of people here know. I honestly think it's his weakest work, to me. Paragon pretty much took the words out of my mouth with most of it, so I won't get in to that too much and try to focus more on a positive note. But contrary to a lot of fans, I think the beginning of GNG is a bit stronger. I find the idea of an isolated, pretty much helpless and not technologically advanced village under siege by a very intelligent and systematic animal to have a lot of potential. It's implied that the locals downright thought Akakabuto was something supernatural, because no one could really have a proper encounter with him or shoot him. That's intense, and I find myself wishing so hard that it was explored and executed more thoroughly. The idea of a dwindling line of bear hounds being the only real defense makes for some scary stuff. It almost had a horror motif going on there for a bit, and I really liked that. That being said, @bucciamarcia, I really agree that that was one of the biggest problem with the characterization and characters as a whole. I felt like I couldn't latch on to anyone or anything, and it's a big part of what made the series hollow for me. Which is a big shame, because it was meant to be a journey of bonding and brothers-in-arms, which has potential, but in the end it felt a bit too Pokemon "Gotta Catch 'Em All."

(Wolf Arc spoilers) As I am looking over the Wolf Arc again (to get images for the gallery) I am kind of blown away by Mukonga's edginess. I forgot how.. intense his character was.
Bro just rips off his leg in the middle of battle like, "lol I don't need this anymore" just to stab that other guy in the face with his leg-bone. I mean he dies right after, but you know what, at least he went out in style.
2 edgy 4 me
But he is truly worthy of such an epic 'stache.

Paragon: (Wolf arc spoilers) What about Shuuga? If I recall, he committed suicide as a ragequit because he was going to lose.

Kit(Wolf arc) I think it's safe to say when people have a leg ripped off and fashioned into a spear they can be considered intense. Even if they ragequit out of life.

Okay, finally joining this thread. I've talked about GNG on few occasions already, but let's give it a proper attempt this time. I was introduced to the anime version long before I even knew the manga existed, and I was instantly sold. The anime became one of my favorites and even after all this time it still hasn't fallen off the list. Like Paragon said, the series is really dull and repetitive when you look at it objectively, just bunch of manly menz looking for more manly menz. But my enjoyment for it comes purely from the shallow reason that it's about dogs. If GNG was story of a young human boy joining a rogue forest gang in order to fight a bear then I... okay, I'd still absolutely watch it but I most likely wouldn't rewatch it. I know a lot of people have complaints about the art and animation of GNG, varying from saying it's generally bad to saying it's too 80s, and those are points I've never really understood. I'm not trying to claim that every single frame of GNG would look great, but I'm just forgiving of the mistakes that have ended up in there. I personally really like the art style and colors, and don't even hate the fact that the style wasn't consistent. The biggest complaints I remember ever having when it came to art/animation of GNG was/is during the part where Bill was introduced, and that was just because the Kai Bros were suddenly just bit too dark compared to them earlier. That's honestly all I remember being concerned about whenever I was watching the anime, and I still think that even the episodes with the worst art look better than the best animated eps of GDW. Of course this is just my preference. There are also couple things I simply prefer in the anime, the biggest one being John's design. I like the way he looks in the anime a lot more, and the same goes for the Kai Bros. I love the music. The opening theme is my jam, and every single track from the soundtrack is to my liking. They aren't all some epic pieces as couple of them sound almost humorous, but I still like them or maybe that's the reason why I like them. Y'all know that track that plays (ia) when the Iga dog sees Ben's group dragging that one random Iga to bury him? That's one example of something that sounds hilarious but I like it for it. The sound effects are also funny more often than not, but they get no hate from me either. I just really like the anime, ok? Moving on to the manga. In general I like the manga well enough, but I definitely prefer the anime. I like Yoshi's art in GNG, it was pretty nice until the end but I do prefer how it was in the beginning more than the end. I liked how John really looked like a different breed, etc, and I liked Gin's original scar placement a lot more than what it ended up being toward the end. My preference for the anime probably is mainly because of some of the moves the dogs used were simply hard to understand in the manga. Movements like that just are better on screen than on page ( no shit, Sherlock), and maybe this plays into my lack on enthusiasm over the Wolf Arc but I'll get back to that later. For now I can get into the actual plot stuff after all my positivity is out the way. Honestly same here. The beginning is rather intense and I don't just mean that moment when the woman opens her eyes to see her boyfriend's been decapitated. The mood in general is very serious and it really could've been a start for some good animal-themed horror. Sadly we didn't get that. I liked the idea of boy and his dog training together in order to take down a nearly demonic bear. I was all for that, Daisuke and Gin were steadily forming to be a good team before Yoshi switched story lines (when first watching the anime I was disappointed that the dogs started talking). I actually liked Gin before he started speaking, but after that... not so much. As soon as the story started focusing only on the dogs Gin quickly became the dull main character who rides through everything with their main character powers. No matter how many dogs they gathered, Gin always was the smartest, fastest, and most resourceful. He became a platoon leader just like that, and just ugh... I'm not a fan. I know I'm being rather hypocritical because these attributes were all things that made the other characters think that Gin really might be Riki's son, and I am a big fan of Riki.I did like Gin's fight with Sniper, because it tried to portray Gin as the underdog against Sniper's experience. He would've died if it wasn't for that collar, and even though Gin randomly became faster and more agile when the collar was cut, his teeth still weren't enough to really hurt Sniper. Gin had to think fast to find another way to defeat him, and I did like that. Similar vibe was going on earlier with Gin vs Kurotora, and I liked that too but Gin vs Sniper is somehow better because it's later in the series. But it's also bit weird after Gin's stunts against Kurojaki, who should've been tougher opponent than Sniper but whatever Yoshi. My favorite 'arc' is definitely the Iga & Koga one. I liked the concept, and I like both Akame and Kurojaki a lot, so it's a huge shame that it was over just like that. There was great potential there, but execution was failing. But I have to give props for Yoshi for at least introducing something that made it into his continuity: Ben's eyesight problems. Comparing to some other (and often bigger) things Yoshi brought in and then neglected later on, him keeping hold of Ben's problem is almost impressive. Of course it's sad to be complimenting him over remembering things he put in his own stories, but... that's what it is with Yoshi. The final battle (or battles) were all fine, if not counting Benizakura's death which was just dumb. I also don't care for Akakabuto standing up no matter what was done to him, and I would've preferred it if Gohei's shot had really ended the bear. It would've been fitting since he was the reason this whole mess even started and also then Riki wouldn't have needed to die. Wolf arc + ending talk under spoiler: When I hadn't read the manga and only saw pictures of the wolves, I used to be pretty sour that they didn't make it to screen. But then turned out I didn't even like the wolf arc. I honestly tried to, and it is kinda weird that I don't like it because the arc finally had some other characters shine and not just Gin and Ben. It was weird that Kurotora had such a big part, specially since up until the death of Akatora the entire point of the Kai bros had been that they fought as a team. They had acted as a trio since they were puppies and apparently hadn't much socialized with other dogs (not counting Moss' group) so logically you'd think they wouldn't be as powerful fighters alone, or that they'd at least struggle fighting without bro support. Oh, but this is Yoshi, so Kurotora got over Akatora's death and then he just separated from Chutora just like that. Anyway, it would've been fine and dandy, but the wolves' supernatural powers just went way too over the top for me. I know the series had strong moments of “bullshit physics” way before the wolf arc, but somehow the special attacks here just went waaaaaay too over the top for my taste. I like the wolves themselves and the idea of adding them, but I absolutely hate those secret techniques. Zetsu Tenrou Battoga was borderline too much for me already, but then the techniques just started to pop out like mushrooms in the rain. It's ridiculous that the dogs and wolves were some kind of super animals that could do ancient magical attacks. It was okay when it was the ninja dogs, because that was special on a different level, and they didn't really have anything that supernatural going on. They jumped on trees and attacked from them, they didn't create damn tornadoes. It didn't help that out of the wolves I liked only one got time to really do anything, so let me just whine about wasted potential again. For me the best part of the Wolf Arc was getting more Akame in action. I genuinely liked his fight against Shuuga, it was impressive. And then against White Tiger he was really smart about it and I liked that he used his own techniques, didn't just rely on the new battouga. Maybe I was expecting too much out of the Wolf Arc but I feel like I might've liked it better if it had been in the anime, but I just... couldn't get into it. Just like in the beginning when the story changed from Daisuke & Gin story to what it was, the change to the Wolf Arc felt too different. The problem was that in the beginning the story hadn't really started yet so Yoshi was able get away with changing it like that, but after so many volumes and then suddenly doing all of that... yeah, I get why he wants to pretend it never happened. But, to end this on a positive note: I really like the end with Gohei's death and the dogs paying tribute to him. That is one of the most touching scenes Yoshi has managed to pull off. If the Wolf Arc was cut, and if Gohei had been the one to kill Akakabuto then the scene would be even more powerful, but it's still good ending as it is.

I don't care about any of GNG besides being interested in the Hakkenshi arc so I'll comment because you bring up a main point I have: Translating more of the story so I can actually once and for all read it, though I still have no exact opinion until the actual arc is finished because I know there's a billion things I don't know about the wolves yet.
My main disappointment is the fact that Gaia's wolf clan is absolutely never shown unless they are fighting Reima's wolf clan or Ouu. Gaia's wolves have no personalities, barely any dialogue, and are literally only there so that Ouu can collect all the pokemon moves before they forget them in GDW. Despite it being a huge controversy in the plot that no one knows who the true successor to the Hakkenshi are, Ouu immediately decides Reima is the good guy (even though he isn't, he's pretty much as bad as Gaia) and they need to kill these people they've never met, even though Reima's group are the ones who kidnapped Ben's wife and children. Outside of that, Gaia is fortunately generic evil and his wolves do and say nothing but repeat that they're the true Hakkenshi so good thing we don't have to have a second opinion or that would've been awkward to help the impostors win (which they might've, but plot convenience, I bet Reima and his group are somehow proven to be the true ones).
Another thing is the supernatural powers and everything, I totally agree with that. It's jarring to see after we've used guns and teeth and a heavy hunting dog trope for someone to literally wander in, go into Gin's brain, and show him the cosmos and summon tornadoes. But I think this mainly has to do with Yoshi's editor, since Yoshi claimed he never even wanted to write the wolves in and wanted to end at Akakabuto (which makes sense), but his editor wanted him to add more to it. That could be the reason that so much potential seems lost with characters or pacing, because as soon as the Hakkenshi show up, it's just a quick race to the finish line to wipe out all the bad guys, gain some powers, and head back home after saving the day again. It's also the reason why GDW tries to never mention the wolves again (despite... keeping in the Battouga) and why no one but precious Ginga heroes can use the Battouga (...until GDWO...).
However, I think the actual idea and rituals behind the wolves is pretty awesome. Just translating what they say as they explain their 'religion' of their 'sacred star' and showing their god and feeling devotion to him is really interesting. The idea of Hakkenshi and Battougas and stuff would have been great... in a separate story. That is one of the most frustrating things about Yoshi: he'll go on for too long with the story and just mix in whatever he thinks of instead of just making a new original story or series like anyone else would. But the wolves I cut some slack since it was his first big hit of sales and popularity so his editor just wanted to make sure the series stayed afloat.
Could you imagine just a series by Yoshi focusing solely on the wolf clans and their powers and their history with literal dragons and star gods? Even with Yoshi's level of writing, I think it would've been fucking amazing.

Even with Yoshi's level of writing, I think it would've been fucking amazing. Exactly. Most they do is just stand around with their jaws dropped in amazement over whatever fight they are witnessing. And Reima mellowed out from his introduction as soon as Yoshi decided “hey, this guy is the good wolf” and then just rolled with it. But that's pretty much the case with the dogs who came in as threatening but then joined because manly manz reasons, so basic Yoshi. It would've been really interesting for the story if Reima's group had been impostors, and Gin and co would've later on had to realize they did a bad thing by helping them, but obviously that's not something Yoshi would pull. Specially with not wanting to do the story at all! Like you said, Gaia fits the generic villain type and you kinda have to wonder if Yoshi added some of that villain action (like training pups to do suicide missions) just to make Reima seem like a great fella in comparison. I'm not 100% certain but I don't remember Reima's group being proven to be the true ones, so the whole thing could've just as well been a case of word against word. Unless we count Juga being all shocked and impressed with “could they really be the real ones?” as confirmation. And I gotta appreciate how the one time Yoshi wanted to end something early, his editor was like “nope, keep going.” Agreed, as a separate story it would've been interesting to get into. Yoshi could've showed both sides, really put effort into the history of the two clans, without any meddling dogs in the mix. He could've even kept it ambiguous which one was in the right, and given each side equal amount of focus in the story to strengthen that idea too... I mean yeah, it's Yoshi so we wouldn't have gotten anything too deep but it.. it could've worked.

Hmm, I'm enjoying it so far! ...but I've only read as far as chapter 3 of volume 8, and the rest of what I know is from seeing clips of scans. I'm trying to avoid huge spoilers (well, any huger than what I already know). Sure, the wolves' powers are pretty over-the-top, even for Ginga, but it's a nice break from 'dogs that leap and bite in weird ways.' I'm not surprised to hear that Yoshi didn't develop Gaia much. When has Yoshi ever given his villains real personalities and depth? I feel sorry for the wolves as a whole, though, what with being driven underground by genocide, but that does raise the question... ...if they always had all these abilities, why didn't they use them to fight back against the humans? Why didn't they take out Akakabuto? I guess maybe they didn't fight him so as not to draw attention to themselves, but you'd think they could have done a lot of damage to the human hunters.

Same here. Also, he did develop the story of 1 villain, but... He's in the sequel to GNG

I guess maybe they didn't fight him so as not to draw attention to themselves, but you'd think they could have done a lot of damage to the human hunters. Spoiler is about your last point: The wolves had no powers back then (or at least no Battougas) so they were pretty much defenseless against the humans and that's why they had to go into hiding. The wolves had to fight the snake/dragon/whatever monster there before they could build their kingdom underground. The monster was defeated by the wolf king's eight most powerful warriors, and they believe that them eating the monster's flesh is what gave the original eight their magical abilities, which then passed down from them.
As for why didn't they do anything about Akakabuto... I don't think it was ever addressed directly, neither by the wolves or the dogs. The wolves did know what was going on – since they were aware that the battle had ended in dog victory – but I assume they simply didn't see it as their problem. The wolves were too rapt up in fighting against each other, and lots of them even looked down on dogs, so they probably saw no reason to help.

Guys i need help! I'm doing a thing for school where i'm suppose to analyze a comic/manga. I chose Ginga Nagareboshi gin. I'm doing a size chart thing with the biggest and smallest dogs in gng. I used Oliver as the smallest (because i'm pretty sure he is the shortest fully grown dog in the manga) But i can't decide if Benisakura or Moss is the biggest so i'm wondering what you think and why??
