So, there's been a distinct lack of translating going on, even with me starting to come back to Ginga Scans... And I know you're all looking at me like...
SO. Just to prove that I'm totally not just sitting here watching Youtube LPs and reading fanfiction all day (Would I lie to you fine people?), I've decided to typeset and post some of the random scene snippets I've been translating, to get back into the "feel" of it. I don't want to litter you guys with transliterations or downright errors because I'm rusty, after all. (Even though I still end up doing it...)
These are not in any kind of order, and I will upload them as I get them done. I'm not really going to take any requests, to keep the added stress of demand low, but people are free to make suggestions for small scenes, and if they strike my fancy, I may end up doing them. For now, though, they're just scenes I could think of, that I was personally interested in seeing done, for one reason or another. And knowing me, you can count on most of those being scenes that might help clear up misconceptions about characters. They may be from any series, but since I was flipping through a ton of GDW, most on my list are from that, right now.
THERE WILL DEFINITELY BE SPOILERS. I'm trying to do the scenes that no one has read, after all. Enjoy!

#1: Kotetsu has a fanboy moment - GDW vol 36, pages 54-55
Because it was so adorable, I couldn't resist... Everyone seems to assume Kotetsu is a brat, but he's actually a nice kid.
After some of Hougen's old minions have been terrorizing his town, and killed someone he loved, Kotetsu decided to become an Ohu soldier and fight against such people. However, he was chased away for being a kid (hypocrisy much...?), and heartbroken, tried to remain close-by without being seen. Weed, having been gone, escorting the injured Koyuki home after promising to find her brother for her (who she'd come looking for in the first place), comes back and stumbles upon Kotetsu being attacked by the aforementioned ex-Hougen thugs. This short scene is what follows, after the puppy realizes that his number one idol is the guy who just rescued him.
#2: Joe beats up Koushirou and Weed, for talking to each other - GDW vol 52, pages 76-89
Really had to force myself to get motivated to work on anything Joe-related, but... People have often asked me why I hate him so much, and this was the easiest scene to answer that, without covering a ton of content.
LOL, this is a new computer, so I don't have all the fonts we usually use for our typesetting, yet. Cheesy default "yelling" fonts, go! (Lololololol, dat chapter title, doh...)
This one doesn't really need a context explanation, but I ended it where I did because after that, Joe's hunting buddies just come running up, and then chill there to bully Weed for a few pages... And then Yoshi attempts humor once again, by having Koushirou stay there (I guess Joe decided to go back to ignoring his existence, again) and have an argument with Kotetsu about who is more grown up, and it ends up veering off into usual Yoshi-humor territory by having Koushirou assume that Kotetsu's claim of having "the mind of an adult" means that he's knowledgeable on the subject of "H." Something most people know by it's Japanese phonetic form, "ecchi," which is a branch-off word abbreviated from the familiar "hentai," AKA "sex." Yep... you can see why I stopped... Anyway, here's Joe abusing his kid, who was obviously well afraid of him already, to the point of shaking like a bloody leaf in a storm, from likely past abuse - and then abusing his little brother because he's decided to take out his (admittedly justified) daddy issues on him for no reason other than Weed was trying to get to know him, and his nephew, after not knowing of their existence for the majority of his life. Yaaaay! Lol, you know you're a major dick when even Weed's getting pissed at your attitude.
#3: Sirius, Bella, and Rigel wait for Sasuke in the shed - GDWO vol 1, pages 184-187
After the destruction of Ohu, with the volcano eruption, Sasuke managed to save three of the puppies - the fate of Orion and the rest of the soldiers unknown to them. He's been taking care of them on his own, ever since, and has told them to wait in a shed until he comes back. However, a snow storm has started, and the kids are getting cold and scared, as their guardian fails to return. Tensions mount, but luckily, they have a big brother to break it up and offer comfort.
*Puts up fists against all Bella hate incoming* I'll fight you all, yo! But anyway... I think this is the one scene everyone liked in GDWO, just based on pictures, so I decided to do it. I didn't even notice the irony of Sirius's exasperated “Oh, brother...” until I was done and posting this, heh heh.I also like how Yoshi says Rigel is the 2nd oldest, but later changes it to him being younger than Orion.
Rigel is channeling so many “cooties!” vibes here that I can't even take them in. I love it. And you gotta love that smooth manipulation by Sirius.
#4: Reika pushes Hougen into the river and George/Jouji saves her - GDW volume 28, pages 24-51
Okay, one thing to keep in mind with this one... We are going to go with "George," despite my using "Jouji," here. The name can be either one, as Jouji is also a Japanese name, and many celebrities romanize their "Jouji" kanji as "George." You are free to call him what you want, but the actual GDW translations will be going with "George." The only reason it's "Jouji" here is because I got confused on what we'd decided, and it was too late to change it without a lot of effort, when Rascal corrected me, as I was already typesetting. That in mind, here's a super freaking long scene for you guys - but one of my favorite! Y'all can't deny the Reika. *gestures at self with sparkling grin* Double pages have been resized, but saving them (if you guys are doing that) will save them in their original sizes.Sorry about the lazy-ass chapter title.
As for starting context, it's essentially the same as the anime, except with different characters. After Weed is only able to graze Hougen with his Battouga, the Dane stumbles upon George's group, who have been left to wait during the battle, with him as guard. George leaps to protect everyone, but is defeated, along with Cross. Hougen then sets his sights on the blind Ben...
And as a little bonus, I included the two pages showing them arriving safely at the dam where some Ohu soldiers have been stationed - to wrap it up. (GDW vol 28, pages 110-111)
I really wish George and Reika had ended up together, actually... Hiro/Reika would have been great if it was them bonding over their survivor's guilt from the John incident, but since Yoshi didn't so much as hint at that (or anything else) going on, once, it just seemed incredibly random. On the other hand, George seemed to genuinely believe in her and was crushed that she would betray them like that, and then overcame his water trauma to save her and redeem some of his guilt from not being able to save his sister from a similar situation, and thus realized his life can still have purpose.
As for the chapter title of the one that ended, it literally reads “Full-Body Weapon,” which I assume is supposed to refer to Reika using her entire body to shove Hougen off, rather than her teeth, like the dogs normally would. I couldn't find an English equivalent that got the same meaning across without sounding stupid, so I just went with this.
#5: Weed confesses his love to Koyuki - GDW volume 38, pages 137-143
Ever since being thrown together by her brother, Koyuki and Weed have become friends, and starting visiting each other often. However, right as Koyuki has begun to realize she's developing feelings beyond friendship and gratitude for the Akita, her owner decides to send her to live with a business partner - who happens to be a breeder looking for a female Kishuu with good lines - to help his boss get on his good side. Gin explains to the distraught Koyuki that Weed will probably never love her like she wants, because he's only keeping her around due to the fact that she's a lot like his mother, Sakura. Or, if you don't want to be a dick about it, Weed is too traumatized by his mother's death to distinguish between actual romantic love or just a weird Oedipus complex. Hearing this, Koyuki decides not to tell Weed what her master has planned, and face her uncertain future the best she can, rather than take up more of his life and time he could be using on responsibilities to Ohu. As Koyuki is being loaded into the car, her brother, Kotetsu, runs off to tell Weed the truth.
I'm sorry I kept it to the bare minimum... There is a bit more, but it's pretty much just Narrator Man talking, which is never exciting. I have some more Weed/Ko scenes from after this planned, no worries. Either way, this scene is extremely sweet and I love the rare devotion to a loved one, shown. Though I still have mixed feelings, since I don't think it's responsible for Weed to ditch Ohu. I know Gin is alive, but he's old, and they don't have anyone better suited to take over after he's gone.
#6: Joe's death - GDWO volume 1, pages 110-123
As the erupting volcanoes drive everyone apart and throw the Twin Pass into chaos, Orion and his uncle, Joe, end up stranded in the small pocket of a deep fissure, suspended only by snagged debris. The young Orion desperately wants to get back to his parents and siblings, but there seems to be no way out of the chasm. That's when Joe hears the sound of flowing water below them...
And here you have why Orion runs around doing stupid stuff with his black and white view of justice. He took Joe's final words to heart, and pretty much saw them as “any bad guy = needs to be taken down,” which probably gave him a pretty skewed interpretation of justice. No matter how you feel about Orion, you gotta admit that was an extremely traumatic experience, and those'll do that... I don't necessarily like him, but I can still feel for the little guy. (Yes, his taking Joe's words to heart is actually referenced.)
I'd draw some thematic mirroring from this, but honestly Jerome and Weed's relationship and situation has nothing to do with Joe and Orion's, so I can only assume Yoshi's just being lazy with his recycled ideas, again. Oh well...
And yeah, I used “bad guys.” I know it's child-speak, but it just felt the best, with how Orion uses it throughout the series. You also talk that way to children, so I guess it works, despite the serious situation.
A few of the pages are noticeably titled, but I couldn't be assed to fix it, so I just rotated the text a bit and probably made it worse.
Also the double pages REALLY don't match up, as the entire spine bit is missing, so forgive the gaping white areas. I really didn't want to spend time editing in bits to make it look complete... If you can't see it with the resize, just right-click on it and click the "view image" option.
#7: Lydia Valentine's Day special! - GDW volume 53, page 192
Well, I decided to do something for all my Valentines out there! I chose avery small, lighthearted scene with Lydia, because she has a heart-shaped mark on her forehead. As for the 'auntie' vs 'miss' thing, Kotetsu was using "obaa-san," which is a term for a middle-aged woman older than you, (yes, literally meaning 'aunt') and she asked him to call her "onee-san," which is a similar term, but for younger women who aree still older than you. (Literally meaning 'big sister.') So Lydia isn't getting offended that he called her his relative, but rather that he essentially called her old.
Happy Valentine's Day!
#8: Koyuki attacks the hybrid - GDW volume 56, pages 8-24
As promised to @bucciamarcia , for his badass Koyuki character in XCOM. This is as close as Yoshi's gonna give us.
Charged with hiding Weed's wife, Koyuki, her brother, Kotetsu, and Weed's nephew, Koushirou, GB and Sasuke take shelter in a den of rocks after bumping into the hybrid. However, there isn't much room, and Sasuke cannot avoid the claw that hooks into his collar...
And then they all get struck by lightning. No. I'm not even kidding. Anyway, this is typeset extremely lazily, so I apologize for that... Before anyone gets up in a tizzy, I am pretty sure Koyuki was not making an "all-women" statement, but rather talking about herself. Her little brother, Kotetsu, got hurt, earlier (you can see his still-bleeding eye) and so it seems more like she realized that she herself is powerless, which leads to her realizing she's powerless in the entire war. So because she loves Weed, she tries to sacrifice herself for the men who CAN fight in the war, and potentially help her husband. No, it's not necessarily the right choice, perhaps, but I do think it makes sense and is extremely noble, by Ginga standards.
Luckily Deuce Ex Kagetora does something important in the series for the first time since early Hougen arc.
#9: The Sakura and Lucy incident - GDW volume 13, pages 78-95
Been wanting to do this one for a while, as it's basically the entire reason Weed ended up in his situation... So here's another long one for ya!
Roughly a year and a half ago, Gin left Ohu on a journey of condolences with Akame, John, and Tesshin - to visit the families of the soldiers who died in the war(s). Along the way, he met Sakura, and she traveled with him for a while. Now, in Tesshin's debut, he tells Weed a story about his mother, and how she came to end up away from Ohu. The story involves Smith, as well, and how he likewise left his home...
As a note: By “it was the third year” I can only assume that Tesshin means the date. Japanese-style dates are often written as “___ year of the ___ era.” However, I'm not too knowledgeable in the eras, and this may not even make sense, because if I'm not mistaken, GDW should be taking place in the Heisei Era? Which would make the date he's referencing 1991, I believe, and I can't remember if GNG's date was ever mentioned. If not, then he may mean Gin was actually traveling for three years, which would be a gaping continuity error, because Tesshin mentioned LITERALLY A FEW PAGES AGO that he'd been traveling for a year and a half. So unless I messed up the translation by overlooking something obvious, then I have no clue.
Gin's comment about the children could also be implying he wants them to be like him, in general, but I chose just the 'look like' option, because it made it sound less... Well, narcissistic. Gin is so damn blunt and weird, sometimes, in Japanese. Like I get what the comment means, but it sounds sooo bad, no matter what wording I use, LOL.
Also I apologize for forgetting the chapter title, there. It's literally something like “Smith's Mistake” which doesn't sound nearly as heavy as it should.
Okay, enough notes! As for my opinion on this scene, I've heard a lot of hate against Lucy, and I do get that it was a terrible, terrible thing for her to do. However, I really do find her story sad. She was so wrapped in grief that it was hard for her to talk about her husband, and all we see is Ohu brushing it off as her being reclusive, or even crazy. In the end, she did go crazy from it. She seemed really far gone, there, in the end. I don't think the series ever makes any mention as to whether Smith and the others actually did kill her, but I can only assume so, since she never shows up again, and Ohu is very big on keeping even painful promises. The fact that Smith took the entire fall in the end is depressing as hell, too, considering what happens.
Though on a lighter note... Am I the only one amused by Tokimune's constant shocked expression? It's warranted in the last scene, but earlier, he was just looking at the girls like “Whatwhat?! Talking?! Mindblown!!”
Like seriously, I couldn't stop snickering. Every panel.
#10: Bonn vying for Orion's attention - GDWO volume 16, pages 123-125 (122-124 in our RAW file names)
No real context for this is needed, other than Orion is bringing back Sirius, Kurokama, and his army to become comrades, after Ohu killed Kurokama's brother. Yeah... Awkward. But I kinda just wanted to personally do the little scene with Bonn, since he started growing on me somehow, and I gigglesnorted a bit when he didn't even know you're supposed to wait until people finish talking. When Orion is teaching you about proper etiquette, you know you done goofed.
For those who may not know what a Mameshiba is, they're a popular thing in Japan.
The joke is of course that Sasuke is a Shiba.

#11: Weed and Koyuki visiting Sakura's grave - GDW volume 40, pages 82-93
Just some more Weed x Koyuki fluff. Not much context for this one is needed, just as a note, Koyuki specifically means "mother-in-law" when she's talking to Sakura, but I just left it as "mother" due to people not really calling people that when talking to them, in English. Hope that wasn't too confusing!
Credit goes to the lovely Ace for typesetting these for me.

#12: Conversation with Hougen's scouts - GDW volume 17, pages 186-196
I've seen a lot of people wanting to know the difference between this scene from the anime, so while I didn't want to spoil the obvious scene after it, I thought I'd do the conversation leading up to it. I think it goes without saying, but if you want to debate this scene in any real detail, please create a separate thread for it, rather than filling this one up with in-depth discussion. We all know this scene is a bit of a touchy subject in the fandom, and that is fine, but please keep in mind that this thread is intended for the translation snippets, and not big debates. Thoughts are fine, but please keep it brief and unheated, here.
After sending GB and Sasuke out on a scouting mission to find where Gin is being kept, Weed's group spots some strange dogs in the trees. After chasing them down and capturing them, they discover that they are lookouts working for Hougen and this conversation ensues...
Once again, big thanks to Ace for typesetting this one for me!

#3: Sirius, Bella, and Rigel wait for Sasuke in the shed - GDWO vol 1, pages 184-187
